I am the second oldest of 20 children and the oldest of eighteen in one household. I grew up taking care of everyone else and their needs. Often, I was told that I’m the oldest and I must be an example. I grew up always being in charge and stepping in to take charge when no one else would step up to do so. I put myself, my needs and desires last and kept doing what was expected of me. I was being a people-pleaser, peacekeeper, never saying no, doing my best to make things work, solve whatever problem that occur, and making myself available to be of service even when I didn't want to be.
I was not being my true self nor living the life I dreamed of and desired. I would hide my feelings about how I really felt and what I really would like to be doing. I was being this dedicated woman, sister, mother, wife, church member, and employee, who was settling in my life. What would people think of me if I stop doing what they expected and they were so used to me doing? Would they be mad at me, no longer like me, think I'm dumb or things wouldn't get done correctly? I wondered when I am going to live the life I really desire and be truly myself. Can you relate?
For over 25 years, I worked in the Administration field even though I was not passionate about it and knew it wasn't my purpose. I knew how to do it well, developed several skills and work experience so I better keep doing it. I'm getting too old to go back to school. I have family responsibilities that I have to take care of. I better stay where I am. It's what I'm used to doing, it's familiar, and in my comfort zone.
I got laid off from my 14-year job and accepted a position as a CDCI II. Shortly after working that job, I knew it wasn't for me and yet, I was doing my best to stay there and work. I kept doing it and it wasn't working well for me. One day I made a decision that this isn't working, and I love myself and my kids too much to let this job kill me. I stepped out in faith and told God that I'm trusting Him, and I left. I started looking for another job. While looking, I begin to think about what I really wanted to do and that was to be a Life Coach. I prayed and made the decision that I will have my own coaching business.
I was raised in a church for 37 years. I love God and church. I didn’t agree with the strictness, the rules, and regulations. Yet, I stayed there. This is where I was raised. My family goes here. This is my church home. I battled with my dissatisfaction and staying in the familiar until one day I asked God where I am supposed to be. I love being there with my family; yet, I needed to release them and anything else that was making me stay. I made a decision that I must move on. After praying and letting God lead me, I got the courage to leave and found another church home.
For over 22 years, I was married. We had our good times and our bad times. I valued marriage and was a devoted wife determined to make our marriage work. We would communicate and changes would be made. I would pray and believe God that our marriage is going to work if I forgive and keep moving forward from the past. It appeared that things were getting better, and our marriage will work out. Well, one day I read an email to my husband from another woman. I was so disappointed and devastated. I couldn't believe that things weren't really changing. I cried and decided that day that enough was enough and that this marriage isn't good, healthy nor working for me. My kids and I moved out. I later divorced him. We are really good friends and love our children dearly.
That devastating day became the steppingstone for a brand-new day for the change that put me on track of living the life I truly desire, loved and dreamed of. I attended coach training at iPEC – Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. I am a Certified Professional Coach.
I am still dedicated and yet I'm no longer settling. Everything isn't peaches and cream. Sometimes, I make choices and have to pay attention to how I feel about them, whether I want to keep doing it or stay where I am. I make decisions that are important and work for me. I do things that I've never done before. I'm being positive, energetic, passionate, fun and free. I'm getting healthier and slimming down. I’m a single mom with three beautiful, intelligent and loving children, a fabulous and loving granddaughter and a miracle bundle of joy grandson. It's never too late. I started at the age of 42 and now over 60, living my dreams and my life doing what I enjoy and love. I thank God.
